For my inquiry project I’ll be exploring the intricacies of pie and pie making. Why pie? Fruit pie is one of my favourite desserts, and I think of it as a quintessential North American classic. Despite having only a few ingredients, I’ve found pie making has presented a challenge that I’ve yet to master. Further motivating this project is the sorry state of store-bought options. Most supermarkets stock only inexpensive, mass produced products that aren’t all that tasty.

Beyond the what and how of making a delicious pie at home, I’m also interested in exploring the history and evolution of pie, both here at home and around the world. Savoury pie traditions from New Zealand, England and elsewhere come to mind. I question whether there’s any connection to French cooking as an epicenter of pastry and am interested in exploring pie’s origins.
